What we do
Proper pruning is not about hacking off limbs — it requires understanding of tree biology, branch collar anatomy, and species-specific growth patterns. We follow ANSI A300 pruning standards on every job.
We are familiar with Calgary's tree bylaws, including the elm pruning ban (April 1 – September 30). We only prune elms during the permitted November–March window.
Crown cleaning
Removes dead, dying, diseased, and broken branches from the canopy. Should be performed on every mature tree every 3–5 years. Reduces risk of falling branches during Calgary's windstorms and chinook events.
Crown thinning
Selectively removes interior branches to increase light penetration and air movement. Reduces wind resistance — important for trees exposed to chinooks — and allows more sunlight to reach your lawn below.
Crown reduction
Reduces the overall size of a tree's canopy without changing its natural shape. We never top trees — crown reduction follows branch architecture to selectively shorten limbs back to lateral branches.
Structural pruning
Establishes a strong central leader and well-spaced scaffold branches in young trees. A properly pruned young tree requires far less corrective work over its lifetime.
Branch removal
Targeted removal of specific limbs that pose a risk — overhanging branches that damage roofs or fences, low branches that interfere with mowing. All cuts are made at the branch collar to promote proper wound closure.
Storm damage cleanup
Calgary's summer hailstorms and winter chinook winds can snap branches in minutes. We offer priority storm damage response — removing broken and hanging branches, cleaning debris, and assessing tree health.
Trees we commonly trim in Calgary
Aspen and Poplar
Require regular crown cleaning and removal of co-dominant stems. Susceptible to cytospora canker.
Spruce and Pine
Pruned in late winter. Benefit from lower branch removal and dead interior needle clearing.
Manitoba Maple
Fast-growing but brittle. Regular crown cleaning is essential to prevent limb failure.
Crabapple and Ornamentals
Pruned for shape, flower production, and fire blight management.
Elm
Calgary elm pruning ban: April 1 – September 30. We only prune during the permitted winter window.

- When is the best time to prune trees in Calgary?
- Late winter (February–March) is ideal for most deciduous trees — they are dormant and wounds heal quickly in spring. Spring-flowering trees (crabapples, cherries) should be pruned immediately after flowering. Note: Calgary's elm pruning ban runs April 1 to September 30.
- Can you trim trees near power lines?
- We do not work within 3 metres of energized power lines. For trees growing near overhead electrical service, we recommend contacting ENMAX to arrange safe clearance first.
- How much does tree trimming cost in Calgary?
- Small tree pruning (under 6 metres) typically ranges from $100–$250. Medium to large tree pruning ranges from $250–$600. A free on-site estimate is always provided before any work begins.
- Will you haul away the branches?
- Yes. All trimmed branches and debris are removed from your property and disposed of at Calgary composting facilities. We leave your yard cleaner than we found it.
